Essay writing is an important skill to possess. But if you do not know how to properly write it, that is a big problem. Essay writing is not an easy task. There are many guidelines to follow and a firm structure to be kept. So, here is how a great essay should be written:
- Paragraph 1: Introduction
- Paragraph 2: Body 1
- Paragraph 3: Body 2
- Paragraph 4: Body 3
- Paragraph 5: Conclusion
This structure makes it easier for the writer to compose the essay. So, it can be beneficial for you to follow it.
The main idea in introduction is to state your position. You should show the “thesis” or “argument” of the essay. The essay should begin with a “hook” that grabs the reader’s attention and makes them want to read on. In the introduction you should start from a general information and slowly go deeper and deeper. The thesis statement must be present in your introduction, usually in the end. You should design your intro in such a way, so that it can be an opening for your whole essay. You must pay close attention to your introductory paragraph, as it is the first paragraph of your essay. The introductory paragraph not only gives the reader an idea of what you will talk about, but also shows them how you will talk about it. The Introduction should contain 4-5 well-written sentences.
The Body Paragraphs
The middle paragraphs of the essay are collectively known as the body paragraphs. What are main paragraphs for? The main purpose of a body paragraph is to spell out in detail the examples that support your thesis. For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example. The first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph. In each body paragraph, you should speak about one point of view, giving relevant examples to each. Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why this example proves your thesis.
The first few words are the most important and the hardest to write. So, here are some words to help you start your paragraph first sentences. Those words are transitional phrases, like “furthermore,” “moreover,” “by contrast”, “on the other hand”, etc. Transitional phrases are useful for showing the reader where one section ends and another begins.
Though the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an afterthought. As the final paragraph t is a representative of your whole essay. So, you should pay close attention to it. It should follow an extremely rigid format. One way to think of the conclusion is, as a second introduction, because it contains many of the same features. Conclusion should have 4-5 well-crafted sentences. Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition, like “in conclusion,” “in the end,” etc. And final sentence in your essay – should be a “global statement” or “call to action” that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to an end.
